SHDHS is practicing 14 Days of Peace. Today students are receiving a gift from us, a peace candle and a purple ribbon. The purple ribbon is symbolic, and can be worn or tied around the candle. The ribbon is in memory of the 14 women who were killed in the Montreal Massacre on December 6, 1989 and shows a commitment to end violence against women.
It is our hope your family will consider lighting this candle daily for 14 days. We encourage you to spend time together reflecting on the things you are grateful for and discuss ways we can live together gently, how to be peaceful, kind and thoughtful in all that you do. Perhaps you will reflect on those you miss, or those who are here but are somehow lost. Our school community hopes this gift will open discussion about peace and bring your family together.
We encourage you to take part in our Peace Project by posting a picture of your family on Facebook or Instagram with the candle lit. Use the hashtag #14dayspeacefulways and tag our school @shdhs_panthers (instagram) or @shdhspanthers (Facebook). Alternatively, feel free to send us your family photo for us to share out by emailing it to the address below.
Although there is no recipe for peace we are hoping to collect family recipes of food that brings you comfort. Students and families are encouraged to send in your family recipes and a family photo to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will work towards creating a Recipe Book of Peace to share with our school community. Funds raised from this book will support mental health programs at our school.
Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle. And the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.
